THE
OBJECTIVES OF THIS COURSE:
To enable participants to:
1.
Acquire
a better understanding of the concepts related to children’s rights,
participation, protagonism and governance by children.
2.
Develop
a sound knowledge base on issues related to these concepts including the
Convention on the Rights of the Child and Children’s Development.
3.
Enhance
their skills to enable children to realise their rights through their
(children’s) participation, protagonism and governance.
4.
Empower
children to conduct their own research in order to access, use and
manage information.
5.
Develop
programmes that further Children’s Rights through their participation,
protagonism and governance.
6.
Design
and implements systems for monitoring and evaluating children’s
participation.
7.
Develop
mechanisms and systems that enable the participation of children within
adult organisations.
8.
Conduct
training workshops on children’s rights and participation for children
and adults.
THE
COURSE CONTENT:
The course content will cover the attitudes and perceptions of adult’s
and children towards children’s rights, their participation and
development. The course will also deal with an understanding of
socio-political and economic structures and institutions in order to
design/use these to further children’s participation. It will include
skills, tools and methodology for furthering children’s empowerment
and participation. It will deal with issues related to the partnership
between adults and children and children’s participation in
governance.
The
international scenario in relation to children’s rights and the
Convention on the Rights of the Child will also be covered. The
curriculum will include organisational development with specific
reference to children’s organisations, information management,
strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation.
Best practices in the area of children’s participation and
protagonism will be constantly referred to and lessons learnt from them
will be highlighted.
METHODOLOGY:
The workshop is designed to be as participatory as possible. However
there will be some straightforward input sessions that provide essential
information. A variety of methods and activities will be used in the
workshop. These will be discussed with and explained to participants so
that they may use them in their work.
Considerable
time has been set-aside for field visits to CWC’s programmes. The
experiences of Bhima Sangha, Namma Sabha and Makkala Panchayat will be
shared during the workshop.
The workshop is designed to build on what the participants already know.
Information will be gradually layered in a logical sequence.
Participants will examine their experiences and convert that into a
sound knowledge base. The participants will be encouraged to develop
their own frameworks, tools and codes of conduct and methods of working.
Adults and children will learn to work with each other with
respect and recognition of each other’s strengths and weakness.
There
will be a planning exercise at the end of the workshop with
presentations by participants.
The workshop will attempt to transform the relationship of dependency
between the adult and child participants initially to one of
independence and finally to a healthy relationship of interdependence.
PARTICIPANTS:
The programme will accommodate a batch of 20 adults and 20 children. It
is aimed at frontline workers who work with children and children
themselves. It is mandatory for each adult participant to be accompanied
by a child participant.
The
medium of instruction is English. However courses are conducted in
languages in which the participants are most comfortable with the
assistance of translators. Please do specify if you need a translator.
VENUE:
The workshop will take place in Namma Bhoomi, CWC’s Regional Resource
Centre. Namma Bhoomi is located in Kundapur Taluk, which is in the
foothills of the Western Ghats on the banks of the river Varahi.
Kundapur is 100 kms from Mangalore on the west coast. The closest
airports are Mangalore and Bangalore in the State of Karnataka, India.
PROGRAMME
FEE:
The programme fee for Indian participants is Indian Rupees INR: 25,000/-
per participant and for International participants it is US Dollars USD
600/-. This includes course fees, course materials, a toolkit (in
English), field trips, a doctor on call with an infirmary, food and
accommodation, sight seeing for all. For child participants it also
covers the preparation of a portfolio for each child, pocket money,
accident and health insurance and a medical check up on arrival and
determination of blood group. It does not cover travel and related costs
including transit if any or the cost of translators.
