The Chief Minister of Karnataka, Mr. Kumaraswamy made a commitment today to  ‘take all measures necessary to effectively stop child marriages and to call a meeting at the earliest to pursue this matter with the members of the ‘Say No to Child Marriages Campaign’ and other concerned individuals and departments.

25 representatives of the child and adult organisations representing the ‘Say No to Child Marriages Campaign’ met the Chief Minister today at the ‘Janatha Darshan (meeting the Public) programme in the City of Bangalore.

Ms. Ayamma, (State Secretary of Bhima Sangha) informed the Chief Minister that, “Child marriages continue to take place in our State. Our Campaign has the support and solidarity of over 40,000 children and adults of the State. We urge you to take immediate steps to end this practice”. Ms. Kavita Ratna, who represented the campaign pointed out to the CM that, “In the existing law on child marriages, no officials are held ultimately responsible for its violation. We request you to pass an order to ensure that the District Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police are held accountable and penalized for every child marriage that takes place within their jurisdiction. This step will go a long way to curb child marriages”.

April 30 is the Akshaya Tritiya  day that is considered an auspicious day for marriages. In several states child marriages continue take place on this day. We need to take strong measures to put an end to this abysmal practice.
